Madonna della Misericordia and Plague Doctor juxtaposed
The Virgin Mary’s cloak offers protection against the plague (symbolized by arrows) to the pious and is therefore a symbol of true faith. Only a non-believer would attempt to shield himself from God’s wrath with a literal robe.
